Why It Works in the Classroom

⚡

Questions Throughout — Not Just at the End

Eye tracking with 300+ students showed that questions are a 'black hole for children's attention' — kids read questions 2–3 times and re-read passages to answer them. Wonder.io puts a comprehension question every ~40 words. Students get immediate feedback on every answer, with or without a teacher present.

🧩

No Accounts, No Setup — Works on Any Device

No logins, no class codes, no IT requests. Works on iPads, Chromebooks, and smartphones. Share the link and students start reading immediately. Designed from the start for independent, unsupervised reading — perfect for reading centers, early finishers, and remote learning.

🎯

Built for Reluctant and Struggling Readers

A student in the 20th percentile reads just 0.7 minutes a day. Wonder.io was specifically designed to close that gap. Within 3 weeks of using Wonder.io, students who actively resisted reading were asking when they could read again — including students 1–2 grade levels behind at Title 1 schools.

Built from 4 years of research with 300+ reluctant readers, now used by 80,000+ readers

Created by Elliott Hedman (PhD, MIT Media Lab), Wonder Stories were developed using emotional sensors and eye-tracking technology at Boys & Girls Clubs and Title 1 schools. The research found that questions are the strongest engagement point in reading — so every Wonder Story is built around inquiry-based reading.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Inquiry Based Reading?

Inquiry Based Reading is the pedagogy behind every Wonder.io story. Instead of passive text followed by an end-of-chapter quiz, each story section opens with a question, has students discover the answer while reading a short passage, then asks them to answer it. Research using psychophysiological sensors showed that questions are the strongest point of engagement in reading — so Wonder.io builds entire stories around them.

How does Wonder.io keep struggling readers engaged?

Four mechanisms work together: (1) Questions every ~40 words give ADHD and reluctant readers a constant reason to focus. (2) Immediate feedback — a dancing dinosaur for correct answers, an honest 'wrong' signal for incorrect ones — creates the win/fail cycle that makes reading feel like a game. (3) Bite-sized text reveals one or two sentences at a time so no page ever feels overwhelming. (4) Stories are 300–600 words, short enough to finish in one sitting and earn a score.

Is this aligned with Common Core?

Yes. Wonder.io stories are built on Common Core standards for grades PreK–6. Students decipher word meanings, understand character motivations, and explain how a character's actions affect events — the same inference and comprehension skills tested in Common Core ELA. The question format specifically targets higher-order thinking, not just recall.

Can students use this without teacher supervision?

That was the original design goal. Wonder.io was built for Boys & Girls Club after-school settings where no teacher was present. The inquiry format, immediate feedback, and self-paced structure mean students can read independently and still get the benefits of guided reading — comprehension checks, reflection, and scoring.

Does it work for kids with ADHD, dyslexia, or autism?

Yes. While all kids enjoy Wonder.io, it was specifically designed with focus challenges in mind: limited text per screen, frequent interaction, constant feedback, removal of visual clutter, and stories where kids participate in the outcome. These features directly address the needs of students with ADHD, dyslexia, and autism.

What do teachers say about it?

"I love that it asks kids questions throughout the story and keeps them thinking." — Jesse K., 4th Grade Teacher. "This app has been a godsend for my students. Some of my students hate conventional reading, but love Wonder Stories." — Caupron S., Behavioral Therapist.

What grade levels are available?

Wonder.io has 81+ interactive stories for PreK through Grade 6 (ages 4–12). Each story is labeled with a recommended grade level and estimated reading time, making it easy to match students to the right book for independent reading, reading centers, or small group rotations.

Is Wonder.io really free?

Yes, completely free. No subscriptions, no trials, no credit cards. Every book is free for every student. There are no teacher or student accounts required.
